Crystal Fraser is an Associate Professor at the University of Alberta, holding dual appointments in the Faculty of Arts (Department of History, Classics, & Religion) and the Faculty of Native Studies. Her research focuses on the history of Indian Residential Schools in Canada, Indigenous methodologies, and oral traditions. As a Gwichyà Gwich'in scholar from Inuvik, Northwest Territories, she emphasizes community-engaged approaches to decolonizing historical narratives.
Fraser’s 2024 book, By Strength, We Are Still Here, examines Indigenous resilience in Inuvik’s residential schooling context. She received the Distinguished Academic Early Career Award (2022) and contributes to national initiatives like the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. Her teaching includes courses on residential schools (HIST 462/662), Indigenous histories (NS 314), and oral traditions (NS 355).
Fraser is a vocal advocate for reconciliation, appearing in media outlets such as CTV News, CBC, and international platforms. She advises on projects like Hotıì ts’eeda’s Healthy Family Program and serves on committees addressing missing children from residential schools. Her work bridges academic rigor with community-driven research to advance Indigenous resurgence.
