Cristobal Cheyre is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Information Science at the Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science at Cornell University. He joined Cornell in Fall 2019 after completing a post-doctoral fellowship at Carnegie Mellon University.
His research focuses on understanding the economic and societal effects of technologies that shape our increasingly data-driven society. The goal of his research is to understand both the benefits of digitization and the factors influencing how those gains are allocated across stakeholders.
Cheyre's work spans multiple areas including:
- Privacy regulations and their impact on online content providers
- Behaviorally targeted advertising and its influence on user behavior and well-being
- Economic incentives in online platforms
- Using online platforms to reduce racial discrimination and increase representation of underrepresented groups
His recent publications show a strong focus on the intersection of AI, privacy, and societal impacts. He has published in top venues including Management Science, CSCW, and Digital Government: Research and Practice. His work often examines how privacy regulations like GDPR affect content providers, how image-generative AI can be used in participatory design of public spaces, and the economic grounds for regulating behavioral advertising.
Cheyre has received research funding from:
- National Science Foundation
- Cornell-Mellon Just Futures Initiative
He teaches courses on Networks II: Market Design and Privacy and Security in the Data Economy at Cornell University, and has previously taught at Carnegie Mellon University and Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile.
