Cristine M. Varholy is an Associate Professor of English at Hampden-Sydney College, specializing in Shakespeare, English Renaissance Literature, and Law and Literature. She earned her Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and a B.A. from Wake Forest University.
Research Interests: Her work focuses on gender dynamics in early modern England, examining intersections of law, literature, and cultural practices. She explores themes like sexual assault narratives, cross-class identity, and pedagogical approaches to resistant students.
Institutional Involvement: Varholy serves as Chair of the English Department (2013-present) and contributes to committees including the College Grievance Committee, Honors Council, and athletics mentorship. She has chaired the College Lectures and Programs Committee (2008-2010) and coordinated the Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow Program (2007-2009).
