Cristina TONGHINI is a Full Professor of Archaeology and History of Muslim Art at the Department of Humanities, Ca' Foscari University of Venice. She serves as University Board of Sustainability member and Department Delegate for Sustainability. Her expertise spans Islamic archaeology, material culture, and heritage management. She leads projects in Syria, Turkey, and Northern Iraq, including the Tell Zeyd Archaeological Project (funded by Fondation Max van Berchem and MIUR).
Education: B.A. (1988) and Ph.D. in Islamic Archaeology (1995, SOAS, University of London). Postdoc at University of Florence (1996–1998). Directed major projects like the Shayzar Castle study (2002–2011) and Urfa Citadel research (2014–2016). Research focuses on rural landscapes, hydraulic systems, and fortified settlements in the Islamic world.
Teaching includes courses on Islamic archaeology, heritage management, and cultural geography. She co-edits journals like Islamic Archaeology and participates in international committees. Recent publications analyze Ottoman-period watermills in Mosul, smoking pipes from Tell Zeyd, and UAV-based archaeological monitoring in Iraqi Kurdistan.
