معرفی
Cristina Schmitt is an Associate Professor at the Department of Linguistics, Michigan State University, affiliated with the College of Arts & Letters. Her work bridges linguistics and cognitive development, with a focus on empirical and theoretical challenges in early language learning.
Cristina Schmitt’s research explores how children acquire grammatical structures, emphasizing the interplay between functional morphology, syntax, and semantics. She investigates how variability in linguistic input shapes acquisition trajectories, drawing on experimental and corpus-based methodologies.
She was awarded a three-year $200,000 NSF grant (2017) to study dialects in children’s language development. Her mentorship has supported undergraduates like Abby Jaroszewicz and Mina Hirzel, whose research projects have gained recognition, including the UURAF First Place Winner and Baggett Fellowship.
Schmitt’s work is closely tied to the MSU Language Acquisition Lab, where she supervises student researchers analyzing linguistic patterns in children’s literature and real-world input. Her contributions to education and research have been highlighted in the College of Arts & Letters, including the Outstanding Senior Award for her teaching impact.
