Dr. Cristian Eugen SIMION serves as a Senior Researcher at Romania's National Institute of Materials Physics in Bucharest, conducting advanced research within the Laboratory of Atomic Structures and Defects in Advanced Materials (LASDAM).
His academic credentials include:
- Ph.D. in Condensed Matter Physics (2011), Faculty of Physics, Bucharest University, Romania
- M.Sc. in Theoretical Physics and Condensed Matter (2005), Faculty of Physics, Bucharest University, Romania
- Licence in Physics (2003), Faculty of Physics, Bucharest University, Romania
Dr. SIMION's research pioneers gas sensing mechanisms in n-type and p-type semiconductor metal oxides. He experimentally demonstrated lattice oxygen's critical role in WO₃-based CO detection—a fundamental departure from SnO₂ mechanisms—and developed theoretical frameworks for p-type responses incorporating humidity effects and Debye length. His work establishes quasi-chemical equations to model real-world sensor performance across diverse environments.
He has secured international research funding through the MEDEA project (2018) for methane emission monitoring in agriculture and the MANUNET project (2019) for medical gas sensors, while leading national initiatives on nickel oxide sensors (2021-2023) and sensing analysis techniques (2018). His expertise is recognized through invited presentations at the International Semiconductor Conference (2023) and University College London (2019).
At LASDAM, he investigates complex material systems including Cu/Cr/La/Co-doped BaSrTiO₃, CeO₂:Mn₃O₄, SnO₂-CuWO₄, and ZnO-Eu₂O₃ to engineer robust gas sensors for field deployment under practical operating conditions.
