Craig Smith is a Clinical Professor of Stroke Medicine at the Division of Cardiovascular Sciences, University of Manchester. He also serves as a Consultant in Stroke Medicine at Salford Royal Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and as Stroke Research Lead at the Geoffrey Jefferson Brain Research Centre. Previously, he held roles as Chair of Scientific Committee at the British Association of Stroke Physicians and Greater Manchester LCRN Stroke Specialty Lead. He has a strong academic background, including a BSc (Hons) from the University of Manchester (1992), MBChB (1995), MD (2004), and MRCP (UK) qualifications.
His research focuses on inflammation, immunity, and infection in cerebrovascular diseases, particularly stroke-associated pneumonia and the impact of oral hygiene interventions. He leads major trials such as the CLASP Phase 3 trial and the multicentre CHOSEN trial, and collaborates with institutions like Stanford Medical School, Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, and Columbia University. His work addresses translational medicine, combining experimental models with clinical studies to improve patient outcomes.
Dr. Smith is actively involved in professional committees and has presented at conferences such as the World Stroke Organisation-European Stroke Organisation Conference. He has established the Brain Inflammation Group and contributed to datasets like the Stroke-Associated Pneumonia study. His research aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing health equity and innovation.
He currently supervises/co-supervises 8 PhD students and has led impactful projects such as the Stroke-IMPaCT cohort study and the BHF Centre for Research Excellence. His contributions span from basic science to clinical practice, aiming to reduce post-stroke complications and advance stroke medicine through collaborative efforts.
