Craig Brodersen is the Howard and Maryam Newman Professor of Plant Physiological Ecology at the Yale School of the Environment (YSE), where he leads the Brodersen Lab. His research focuses on plant structure-function relationships, particularly how plants manage water and light under environmental stress. He holds a PhD in Plant Biology from the University of Vermont (2008) and has held academic positions at Yale since 2014, advancing from Assistant to Associate Professor before becoming a full Professor in 2021.
Brodersen’s work integrates advanced imaging techniques like X-ray micro-CT to study xylem networks, leaf anatomy, and hydraulic systems. Key areas include drought tolerance mechanisms, embolism spread in vascular tissues, and evolutionary adaptations enabling plant survival under water scarcity. His lab is based at KROON HALL and the Greeley Memorial Lab, collaborating with institutions globally to address plant physiology challenges in ecology and agriculture.
Recent studies highlight his focus on hydraulic failure in early vascular plants, 3D leaf reconstruction, and the role of mesophyll architecture in carbon dioxide diffusion. He has secured grants including the Newman Family Plant Research Fund and contributed to high-impact publications in Science, Plant Cell, and New Phytologist.
