Craig Bennell is Professor of Psychology at Carleton University, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. He directs the Police Research Lab, exploring psychological contributions to policing through four research areas: evidence-based policing, police de-escalation/use of force, crisis response (especially mental health), and reliability of investigative techniques.
Recent publications analyze conducted energy weapon safety, use-of-force decision frameworks, repeat burglary patterns, tactical team deployments, and crisis negotiation strategies. Methodologically, his work employs systematic reviews, experimental designs, and operational data analysis to inform police training and policy.
His research has practical applications in officer safety protocols, de-escalation training, mental health crisis response, and evidence-based investigative practices. Collaborative projects involve multiple Canadian police services implementing research findings.
