Courtney Hattan is an Assistant Professor in the science of reading at the UNC School of Education, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her expertise spans literacy, educational psychology, and equitable instruction, with a focus on knowledge activation in reading comprehension. Hattan holds a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Maryland, an M.S.Ed. in Reading from Johns Hopkins University, and a B.A. in Political Science from Marquette University.
Her research integrates sociocultural and cognitive theories to address how students’ background knowledge influences comprehension. This work emphasizes mixed-methods approaches and community-informed partnerships, particularly in rural settings. Key areas include formative assessment redesign, neuromyth debunking in teacher training, and gender equity in literacy curricula.
Hattan has been recognized with the 2019 Timothy and Cynthia Shanahan Outstanding Dissertation Award and a Reading Hall of Fame Emerging Scholars Fellowship. Her publications appear in top journals like Review of Educational Research and Reading Research Quarterly, focusing on instructional strategies for knowledge integration and equitable pedagogical practices.
