Cosme Furlong-Vazquez

Cosme Furlong-Vazquez is a Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), serving as Director of the Center for Holographic Studies and Laser Micro-MechaTronics (CHSLT) and NanoEngineering, Science, and Technology (NEST) laboratories. He holds academic appointments in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Physics at WPI, as well as Associate roles at the Mass. Eye & Ear Infirmary and Harvard Medical School.

Education: BS (University of the Americas, 1989), MS (WPI, 1992), PhD (WPI, 1999).

Research focuses on optical metrology, fiber optic sensors, MEMS/NEMS design, and nondestructive testing. Notable projects include holographic otoscopy, shearography-based defect detection, and MEMS sensor development. Awards include SEM Fellow (2025) and Sigma Xi Junior Researcher.

Teaches courses such as Engineering Design Graphics (ES-1310), Machine Elements (ME-3320), and Integrated Thermomechanical Design (ME-4430). Active in professional societies including ASME, SPIE, and IMAPS.
