Corey Hutchins

Corey Hutchins serves as Manager of the Colorado College Journalism Institute and Visiting Instructor in Journalism at Colorado College. He additionally advises the Colorado Media Project and holds a board position with the Colorado chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. His work bridges academic instruction with active engagement in Colorado's media landscape through research, teaching, and public commentary.

Hutchins specializes in documenting and analyzing local news ecosystems, with particular focus on media sustainability and the evolving information landscape. His research examines how communities access news across digital platforms, identifies news deserts, and develops solutions for strengthening local journalism. He maintains the Colorado News Mapping Project, which catalogs over 600 news and information sources across all 64 Colorado counties, including unconventional sources like community Facebook groups and door-to-door town criers.

His scholarly contributions center on understanding the transformation of local news ecosystems, with publications examining university-led initiatives to document state media landscapes and identify gaps in coverage. His work demonstrates how academic institutions can play vital roles in supporting local journalism through research, mapping, and education.

His work receives funding from the Gates Family Foundation, Colorado Media Project, and sponsors of his weekly newsletter.

He leads the Colorado News Mapping Project, a collaborative initiative with the University of Denver that documents Colorado's evolving news ecosystem, identifies communities experiencing information gaps, and provides data to inform policy decisions and funding allocations for local journalism.
