Corene Matyas is a Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Florida, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She holds roles such as Certificate Coordinator and has been recognized with awards including the American Association of Geographers Fellowship (2025) and multiple teaching honors. Her research focuses on tropical cyclone rainfall patterns, GIS applications in climatology, and severe weather dynamics. She has advised numerous graduate students and leads funded projects on tropical cyclone structure and moisture environments.
Education: PhD in Geography (Pennsylvania State University, 2005), M.A. in Geography (Arizona State University, 2001), B.S. in Environmental Geoscience with a Sculpture minor (Clarion University, 1999).
Research interests include tropical cyclone rain shield analysis, remote sensing of rainfall, and socio-behavioral responses to natural hazards. Recent work emphasizes object-based methodologies for quantifying rainfall patterns and environmental impacts. Her publications span meteorology journals and interdisciplinary STEM education research.
Grants include NSF CAREER Award (2011–2018) and collaborative funding for tropical cyclone analysis (2020–2025). She mentors students in climatology, GIS, and atmospheric teleconnections, with a focus on fostering STEM engagement for underrepresented groups.
