Constantin Charles

Constantin Charles is an Assistant Professor of Finance at the Department of Finance, London School of Economics and Political Science. His research focuses on how cognitive processes influence financial markets and decision-making. Previously, he completed his Ph.D. in Finance and Business Economics at the University of Southern California.

Dr. Charles' research interests center on behavioral finance, particularly examining how memory systems, cognitive noise, and narratives affect investor behavior and market outcomes. His work bridges cognitive psychology and finance, using experimental methods to investigate how investors form beliefs and translate those beliefs into actions. He has made significant contributions to understanding why investors' actions often show weak transmission from their stated beliefs, with memory associations playing a critical role in market dynamics.

His most recent publications demonstrate that memory-induced attention can distort prices in financial markets, with firms that are associated in investors' memory experiencing buying pressure even when only one firm announces earnings. He has also shown that cognitive noise substantially weakens the transmission of beliefs to actions, with implications for asset pricing models.

Dr. Charles teaches undergraduate courses including FM100 Introduction to Finance and FM311 Corporate Finance, Investments, and Financial Markets II at LSE. He has also served as a teaching assistant for Ph.D. courses at USC. He is actively involved in the academic community as co-organizer of the Cognitive Foundations of Finance Conference and has refereed for top finance and economics journals including the Journal of Finance and American Economic Review.
