Constance Cartmill

Constance Cartmill is an Associate Professor in the Department of French, Spanish and Italian at the University of Manitoba. Her academic career focuses on 17th-century French literature with particular emphasis on women's writing and early modern autobiographical forms. She also specializes in French travel accounts of North America from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Her research explores Indigenous voices in early travel literature, autobiographical writing, and linguistic analysis of pronouns. She has published extensively on topics including Madame de Sévigné's correspondence, French colonial narratives, and 17th-century French exploration in North America.

Recent work analyzes indigenous representation in French travel accounts (2024), narrative structures in exploration journals (2018), and epistolary methods in colonial writings (2003). Her publications span journals like Neophilologus and Canadian Literature, as well as edited volumes from McGill-Queen’s University Press and Classiques Garnier.
