Dr. Conrad Attard is a Senior Lecturer in Computer Information Systems at the Faculty of Information & Communication Technology, University of Malta, where he also serves as Deputy Dean. His academic journey includes a B.Sc. in Business & Computing from the University of Malta, an M.Sc. from the same institution, and a Ph.D. from the University of Sheffield.
His research focuses on digital health technology with particular emphasis on dementia care solutions. Dr. Attard leads innovative projects developing pervasive electronic monitoring systems that use complex algorithms to recognize human activities, aiming to improve independence for people with dementia while providing valuable insights to caregivers. His work integrates wearable healthcare devices, human activity recognition, and user-centric design principles.
Dr. Attard presented his research at the first National Conference on Dementia held at the Maltese Parliament in 2019, where he outlined seven key points about how technology can empower healthcare professionals and families dealing with dementia. His approach emphasizes the importance of combining technology expertise with healthcare knowledge, ethical considerations, and personalized solutions.
As part of his research activities, Dr. Attard has established specialized labs that simulate dementia wandering patterns using aging simulation suits. He collaborates with St Vincent de Paul Residence (SVPR), Information Systems Limited (ISL), and the Research, Innovation and Development Trust (RIDT) to develop practical solutions for dementia care. His work addresses the significant challenge in Malta where approximately 1.26% of the population (5,301 people) has been diagnosed with dementia.
Dr. Attard's research extends beyond dementia care, with potential applications for monitoring various chronic illnesses. His background in enterprise solutions, particularly in aviation, informs his approach to healthcare technology development. He actively participates in IEEE events and emphasizes the importance of science communication in Malta.
