Dr. Connie de Vos is a Researcher at Tilburg University's Department of Communication and Cognition within the Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences. Her work focuses on sign language studies, phonology, and cognitive pragmatics, with a specialization in rural sign languages like Kata Kolok in Bali.
Education: PhD in Sign-spatiality in Kata Kolok (Max Planck Institute, 2012), Master’s in Linguistics (Radboud University Nijmegen, 2006).
Research interests include the emergence of phonology in emerging sign languages, homesign systems, and the cognitive foundations of pragmatic competence. She leads projects such as the ERC-funded ELISA initiative exploring sign language genesis and the documentation of endangered Bali sign languages.
Notable contributions include developing methodologies for studying rural signing communities and analyzing facial expressions in sign language interaction. Awards include the 2023 LOT Grotevragenprijs for interdisciplinary linguistic research.
