Professor Collins C Iwuji is a Professor of Global Health and HIV Medicine at Brighton and Sussex Medical School and an Honorary Consultant Physician in Sexual Health & HIV Medicine at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. He also holds a faculty position in Population Science at the Africa Health Research Institute in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. His work bridges clinical practice, research, and global health policy, with a focus on improving HIV outcomes in resource-constrained settings.
Professor Iwuji's research spans several critical areas in HIV and global health:
- HIV prevention strategies, particularly the use of antiretroviral therapy for prevention
- ART adherence and treatment outcomes in resource-limited settings
- HIV drug resistance patterns and implications for treatment programs
- The HIV cascade of care and strategies to improve patient retention
- The intersection of climate change and HIV care delivery
His recent publications reveal a growing emphasis on the relationship between environmental factors and HIV care, with multiple studies examining how extreme weather events impact treatment continuity and health outcomes for people living with HIV. This work represents an innovative intersection of climate science and infectious disease management that addresses emerging challenges in global health.
Professor Iwuji has received significant research funding from major organizations including the Medical Research Council, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Academy of Medical Sciences. His current projects include:
- The S3E project (2023-2026) evaluating social and economic impacts of extreme weather on HIV care
- A Gates Foundation project improving HIV treatment cascade data in South Africa (2021-2026)
- MONART Trial optimizing electronic patient records for HIV monitoring in rural South Africa (2020-2024)
As an educator, Professor Iwuji teaches HIV medicine, sexual health, and global health to medical and postgraduate students, and supervises MSc and PhD students in Global Health. He serves as deputy lead for the medical students' clinical elective module, helping to shape the next generation of healthcare professionals.
