Colleen St Clair is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Alberta and serves as Associate Dean (Graduate) for the Faculty of Science. She holds a PhD from the University of Oklahoma and has been at the University of Alberta since 1998. Her research focuses on Conservation Behavior, addressing human-wildlife conflict and wildlife movement in fragmented habitats. She leads projects such as the Canmore Corridor Project and Edmonton Urban Coyote Project, exploring carnivore behavior and human coexistence.
Education: B.Sc. (Distinction, University of Alberta, 1988), M.Sc. (Distinction, University of Canterbury, 1990), Ph.D. (University of Oklahoma, 1995), Killam Postdoctoral Fellowship (University of Alberta, 1995–1997).
Research Interests: Conservation Biology, Urban Ecology, Movement Behavior in Fragmented Habitats, Human-Wildlife Conflict Solutions. She has authored over 100 peer-reviewed papers, supervised numerous graduate students, and secured >$3M in research funding from NSERC and other agencies.
Awards: Includes the Community Scholar Award (2024), ASTech Award (2022), and Distinguished Professor Award (2017). Her work bridges academic research with public engagement through media interviews and citizen science initiatives.
Teaching: Courses include Conservation Biology (BIOL 367), Advanced Ecology (BIOL 603), and Behavioral Ecology (Zool 371). She emphasizes critical thinking and experimental design in graduate training.
Lab Activities: The St. Clair Lab collaborates with government, industry, and NGOs. Current projects investigate grizzly bear-railway interactions, urban coyote ecology, and wildlife corridor effectiveness in the Bow Valley. They engage hundreds of volunteers annually in fieldwork and outreach.
