Colin Studds is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography & Environmental Systems at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, College Park (2009). His research focuses on animal migration, biogeography, and population ecology, with a particular emphasis on migratory birds and the impacts of environmental changes.
Studds' work integrates field studies, stable isotope analysis, and geolocators to track migratory patterns. His research spans topics such as shorebird population declines on the East-Asian Australasian flyway, dragonfly migration phenology, and migratory connectivity of songbirds. He teaches courses in biogeography and physical geography at UMBC.
His lab, the Studds Lab, investigates ecological processes regulating animal distributions and population dynamics, emphasizing species that migrate or undertake long-distance movements. Recent projects include studying climate and human impacts on bird communities and developing methods to improve migratory tracking accuracy.
Studds has advised numerous projects but no formal student names are listed. He collaborates widely, with co-authors including prominent ecologists like Peter Marra and Bridget Stutchbury. His work has been published in journals such as Conservation Biology, Proceedings of the Royal Society B, and Ecology Letters.
