Colin Bailey

Professor Colin Bailey CBE is the President and Principal of Queen Mary University of London. He began his career as an apprentice draughtsman, earning his ONC and HNC before completing a Civil and Structural Engineering PhD at Sheffield University. His academic roles include Professor of Structural Engineering at the University of Manchester (2002–2017), where he also served as Head of School and Deputy Vice-Chancellor. His research focuses on structural engineering, fire safety, and building resilience, with notable contributions to the 'Bailey' fire design method and high-profile projects like the Shard and Grenfell Tower safety advisory panel.

Prof. Bailey has held non-executive roles across education, health, and engineering sectors. He has authored over 140 publications and received nine research awards. His honors include the CBE (2020), Fellowships in engineering institutions, and the 2024 Outstanding Contribution Award for Social Mobility. His work emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, disaster resilience, and equitable education access.
