Prof. Dr. Colette Heald is a Full Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry at ETH Zürich, where she leads the Atmospheric Chemistry group within the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science. She joined ETH in January 2024 after previously serving as Full Professor (2015-2023) and Associate Professor (2012-2015) at MIT with joint appointments in Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences. She holds a B.Eng. in Engineering Physics from Queen’s University (2000) and a Ph.D. in Earth and Planetary Science from Harvard University (2005), complemented by a NOAA Climate and Global Change postdoctoral fellowship at UC Berkeley (2006-2007).
Her research focuses on atmospheric composition and chemistry at global scales, specifically examining:
- Biosphere-atmosphere interactions and aerosol transformations
- Connections between atmospheric chemistry, air quality, and climate change
- Impacts on ecosystem health using multi-scale observations and climate models
She has received significant recognition including:
- American Geophysical Union's James B. Macelwane Medal (2015)
- AGU Fellowship status
- Multiple MIT awards for teaching, mentoring, and leadership (2016-2022)
She directs an active research group investigating atmospheric chemistry-climate interactions, with recent recruitment of postdoctoral researchers (Yumin, Flossie, Clara, David), a Senior Scientist (Helen), and a Scientific Programmer (Fabien). Current projects include biosphere-atmosphere flux measurements and global modeling of reactive species.
