Dr. Clive Chijioke Nwonka is an Associate Professor in Film, Culture and Society at University College London (UCL), affiliated with the Sarah Parker Remond Centre for the Study of Racism and Racialisation. He holds a Visiting Senior Fellow position at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). His research focuses on race, Black film, cultural identity, and the political economy of Black cultural politics, with interdisciplinary work spanning Film Studies, Cultural Studies, and Sociology.
He leads the AHRC-funded project The Colour of Diversity: A Longitudinal Analysis of the BFI Diversity Standards Data and Racial Inequality in the UK Film Industry (2021–2024). His publications include Black Boys: The Social Aesthetics of British Urban Film (2023) and co-edited volumes like Black Film/British Cinema II (2021). His work has been featured in major media outlets such as The Guardian, BBC News, and CNN International.
Nwonka collaborates with institutions like the British Film Institute (BFI), Tate, and Arsenal Football Club. He previously held roles at the University of York and LSE, and served as a Visiting Researcher at Columbia University’s African American and African Diasporic Studies Department.
