Cleve Moler is the cofounder, chairman, and chief mathematician of MathWorks. He held academic positions as a professor of mathematics and computer science for approximately 20 years at the University of Michigan, Stanford University, and the University of New Mexico. In 1989, he joined MathWorks full-time, where he continues to focus on software development and numerical computing.
Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics, Caltech (1961)
- PhD in Mathematics, Stanford University (1965)
Moler’s research interests revolve around numerical analysis, computational science, and mathematical software. His work on matrix computation and algorithm design laid the foundation for MATLAB, a transformative tool in technical computing. His 2020 paper on the history of MATLAB highlights his contributions to programming languages and educational software.
Scientific Awards:
- 2023 ICIAM Industry Prize
- 2017 Computer History Museum Fellow Award
- 2014 IEEE John von Neumann Medal
- 2012 IEEE Computer Society Computer Pioneer Award
- Sidney Fernbach Award
Moler has mentored 16 PhD students, 11 of whom pursued academic careers. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a former president of SIAM. His work includes co-authoring the LINPACK and EISPACK libraries and developing foundational textbooks such as Numerical Computing with MATLAB and Experiments with MATLAB.
