Clemens Icheln is a Senior University Lecturer at the Department of Electronics and Nanoengineering, Aalto University. He is part of the Katsuyuki Haneda Group and holds a PhD from Helsinki University of Technology (2001) and a Licentiate degree (1999). His primary research focuses on microwave engineering, antennas, and propagation, with emphasis on millimeter-wave and sub-THz systems, biomedical applications, and antenna design for mobile and medical devices.
Key research areas include antenna-embedded structural systems, human-body interaction with antennas, and wireless communication technologies. He has led projects such as the EU-funded WEIRD initiative (2021-2025), addressing wireless capsule endoscopy reliability. Icheln has supervised 5 theses and contributed to datasets like 3D printed antenna prototypes and body phantom simulations.
He has received awards including the EuCAP 2007 Best European Collaboration Paper Award and the ISMICT 2019 Best Paper Award. His work spans 140+ publications, with recent contributions on antenna design for 5G, sub-THz systems, and biomedical applications. Icheln actively participates in academic committees for conferences like EuCAP and contributes to data management initiatives at Aalto University.
