Claus Desler Madsen is an Associate Professor at the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. He leads his research group focusing on mitochondrial function and nucleotide metabolism in aging processes, with particular emphasis on immunometabolism and age-related diseases.
Dr. Desler obtained his PhD in 2009 with a focus on bioenergetics and nucleotide metabolism. His academic progression includes:
- Postdoctoral position at Center for Healthy Aging, University of Copenhagen
- Assistant Professor (2012)
- Associate Professor (2018)
His primary research interests center on understanding how mitochondrial bioenergetics and nucleotide metabolism regulate immune cells, the mechanisms responsible for premature aging, factors regulating senescence, and the interplay between the immune system and senescent cells. His work aims to identify how improved immune function might prevent age-related diseases, with specific focus on mitochondrial dysfunction in disease processes.
Analysis of his recent publications (2023-2025) reveals a strong focus on mitochondrial dysfunction in various disease contexts including Alzheimer's disease, FOXG1 Syndrome, and post-COVID conditions. His research consistently connects cellular metabolism with immune function, particularly through pathways like cGAS-STING and pyrimidine synthesis, demonstrating expertise in immunometabolism and cellular aging mechanisms.
Dr. Desler's research has been supported by significant funding sources:
- Grant from Nordea Fonden for aging research
- EU Horizon 2020 support for his research group since 2024
- Leadership of an EU research network with 10 European partners focusing on COVID-19's long-term effects
He leads a research group that investigates the molecular mechanisms of aging at the cellular level, with particular expertise in measuring senescence markers, metabolic factors, and mitochondrial function, aiming to translate basic science findings into potential clinical applications for age-related conditions.
