Claudio Torres, PhD, is an Associate Professor at Drexel University College of Medicine, holding joint appointments in the Departments of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine and Microbiology & Immunology. He also serves as an adjunct faculty member at Jefferson College of Graduate Studies, directing the medical biochemistry course. His research focuses on mechanisms of aging and cellular senescence in neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer's and HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders. Dr. Torres earned his PhD in Molecular and Cell Biology from the University of Concepcion, Chile.
His research investigates how astrocyte senescence contributes to neuroinflammation and disease progression, with emphasis on senescence-associated secretory phenotypes (SASP) and their role in Alzheimer's pathology. He explores interventions like rapamycin to modulate senescence and its effects on disease models. Dr. Torres is an Associate Editor for Frontiers in Endocrinology and reviews grants for NIH and the Alzheimer's Association, alongside journal contributions.
Key areas of study include astrocyte senescence markers, HIV-induced senescence in glial cells, and exosomal miRNAs as early Alzheimer's detection tools. His work bridges basic cellular mechanisms with clinical implications, aiming to identify therapeutic targets for neurodegenerative diseases.
