Claudio Finocchiaro serves as a TD-A Researcher in Mineral Georesources and Mineralogical-Petrographic Applications for the Environment and Cultural Heritage (SSD GEO/09) at the Department of Biological, Geological and Environmental Sciences - Earth Sciences Section of the University of Catania since January 1, 2022. He obtained the National Scientific Qualification (ASN) II band for competitive area 04/A1 on September 6, 2023.
His academic credentials include:
- PhD in Earth and Environmental Sciences (2017-2020) from University of Catania, awarded Doctor Europaeus with honors
- Master's Degree in Geological Sciences (LM-74) (2014-2017)
- Bachelor's Degree in Geological Sciences (L-34) (2010-2014)
- Geologist professional qualification from University of Palermo (2017)
Dr. Finocchiaro's research centers on sustainable geomaterials with applications in cultural heritage preservation. His work spans development of alkaline-activated materials using industrial waste, analysis of historical artifacts (ceramics, mortars, plasters), characterization of zeolites via micro-Raman spectroscopy, and investigation of stone material degradation processes. His methodology integrates field work, advanced laboratory analysis including X-ray diffraction at synchrotron facilities, and sustainable material design principles.
With 26 publications as of April 2025 accumulating 350 citations and an H-index of 9, his scholarly output demonstrates growing impact in sustainable materials science. His research shows strong thematic coherence around circular economy approaches to cultural heritage conservation.
His scientific achievements have been recognized with the SIMP Award for Best Doctoral Thesis (2022) and the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei mobility scholarship (2021).
Dr. Finocchiaro has contributed to significant research initiatives including the REACT-EU project, "AGM for CuHe: Advanced Green Materials for Cultural Heritage," and the SETI project. He maintains active leadership in the scientific community as chairman for multiple conference sessions on sustainable geomaterials and serves in professional associations including SIMP, AIC, GABeC, and ICERS.
