Claudia Ott is a Professor at the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies within the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Göttingen. She holds the title of Honorary Professor, awarded on July 14, 2022, and is renowned globally for her translations of classical Arabic literature, including One Thousand and One Nights (2004), Gold on Lapis Lazuli (2008), and One Hundred and One Nights (2012).
- Education: Studied Arabic, Islamic Studies, Iranian Studies, and other Oriental studies subjects at the Universities of Jerusalem (1986–88), Tübingen (1988–92), and Berlin (1993–98).
- Doctorate: Earned a PhD in Arabic Studies from the Free University of Berlin (1998) for her thesis on Arabic epic literature, Metamorphoses of the Epic.
Her research and creative work bridges Arabic and Islamic studies with literary translation and cultural analysis, particularly of medieval Arabic epics and music. She has collaborated extensively with artists such as Senta Berger, Hannelore Elsner, and Gamal al-Ghitani, as well as orchestras like the Nuremberg Philharmonic and Neue Elbland Philharmonie, blending musical and literary traditions in public performances.
Claudia Ott has received significant recognition for her contributions to literature and translation, including the Johann Friedrich Cotta Prize (2011) and a Leipzig Book Fair Prize nomination (2013). She serves as chairwoman of the jury for the Coburg Rückert Prize since 2007.
Currently based in Beedenbostel, Lower Saxony, Claudia Ott is directing the Martinschor Beedenbostel choir and working on a sequel to her translation of One Thousand and One Nights using the oldest Arabic sources. Her work emphasizes fidelity to historical and cultural contexts while revitalizing classical texts for modern audiences.
