Claudia Bernard is a Professor of Social Work and Head of Postgraduate Research in the Department of Social, Therapeutic and Community Studies (STaCS) at Goldsmiths, University of London. She joined the university in 1994 and has held academic roles since, with prior experience at the University of Portsmouth. Her work focuses on social work with children and families, gender-based violence, and critical race theory, emphasizing intersectional approaches to social justice and ethical research practices.
- Education: PhD in Social Work, MA in Gender and Society, Certificate of Qualification in Social Work (CQSW), Diploma in Applied Social Studies.
Her research explores the interplay of race, gender, and social class in child welfare, including child abuse, domestic violence, and the ethics of care. She advocates for methodologies that amplify marginalized voices and challenges systemic inequities. Claudia teaches at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and leads the PhD programme in STaCS.
Recent publications analyze racial disparities in child protection during the pandemic, safeguarding Black children, and domestic violence interventions. Her work bridges academia and practice, influencing policies and educational frameworks to promote equity. She holds grants from ESRC and Goldsmiths, and serves on committees like the UK Joint University Council Social Work Research Committee and co-edits Journal Ethics & Social Welfare.
Claudia advises students on topics like child welfare inequalities and transition studies. Her interdisciplinary approach fosters collaboration across institutions, such as the Consortium on Practices of Wellbeing and Resilience in BAME Families. She actively participates in global dialogues on social work education and anti-racist practices.
