Claude Alain is a Professor at the University of Toronto, holding cross-appointments in the Department of Psychology, Institute of Medical Sciences (Faculty of Medicine), and Music and Health Sciences (Faculty of Music). He leads the Alain Lab at Baycrest's Rotman Research Institute, focusing on auditory cognitive neuroscience, aging, and neuroimaging. His research employs EEG, MEG, and fMRI to study auditory perception, attention, memory, and their age-related changes, with a focus on bilingualism, musicianship, and dementia.
Education: PhD in Cognitive Psychology from the University of Quebec. He has mentored numerous students and postdoctoral fellows globally, many of whom pursue academic or healthcare careers. His lab is funded by NSERC, Alzheimer Society of Canada, and the William Demant Foundation.
Key research areas include auditory scene analysis, speech-in-noise comprehension, and EEG-based clinical applications. Current projects explore neurostimulation combined with music to enhance memory in older adults, and early Alzheimer's detection via multisensory evoked potentials (MSEP).
Collaborative efforts span institutions like the University of Memphis and the Anderson Lab. The lab houses advanced EEG facilities and engages in translational research to address cognitive aging challenges.
