Dr Clare Carruthers is a Senior Lecturer in Marketing and Tourism at Ulster University Business School with nearly 20 years of experience in business and management education, based in the Department of Hospitality, Tourism and Events Management at Coleraine campus.
Her academic qualifications include:
- BSc in Combined Business Studies (Marketing major) from Paisley University (1996)
- MSc in Tourism from Strathclyde University (1998)
- PGCFHE from Ulster University (1999)
- PhD examining cultural tourism development in post-industrial cities from Ulster University (2011)
Clare's research centers on urban cultural tourism, cultural regeneration of post-industrial cities, the European City of Culture's role in urban tourism, and destination marketing strategies. Her pedagogic research explores student engagement in assessment/feedback processes, digital technologies for educational enhancement, and online learning environments, contributing to Sustainable Development Goals for sustainable cities and communities.
Analysis of her 2017-2024 publications reveals dual research trajectories: educational technology innovations for student engagement and film tourism's impact on cultural heritage conservation. These works demonstrate methodological diversity through case studies and communities-of-practice approaches, bridging theoretical frameworks with practical applications in tourism development and higher education pedagogy.
