Dr. Clare Burns is an Honorary Research Fellow at The University of Queensland and an Advanced Speech Pathologist/Research Coordinator at the Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital’s Speech Pathology Department. Her research focuses on leveraging technology to enhance healthcare access and delivery, particularly in telehealth, virtual reality rehabilitation, and dysphagia management. She leads projects in telepractice models for head and neck cancer care, with a Queensland Health Clinical Research Fellowship supporting her VR-based communication rehabilitation work. She holds a PhD in Telepractice Models from UQ (2017).
Her expertise includes videofluoroscopic swallowing studies, cost-benefit analyses of telehealth services, and implementation science. She has published extensively in Journal of Telemedicine and Telecare, Dysphagia, and BMJ Open. Burns collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to improve rural healthcare access and has contributed to professional guidelines like Speech Pathology Australia’s Telepractice Position Statements.
Her awards include the 2023 Queensland Health Clinical Research Fellowship. She has supervised projects on telepharmacy efficiency, rural service enhancements, and aphasia rehabilitation protocols, reflecting her commitment to translating research into clinical practice.
