Clara H. Mulder is a Professor at the Faculty of Spatial Sciences, University of Groningen, affiliated with the Urban and Regional Studies Institute. Her research focuses on migration dynamics, family ties, housing markets, and demographic transitions. She has led major projects like 'Family ties that bind: A new view of internal migration, immobility and labour-market outcomes.'
Key research interests include the interplay between family relationships and residential mobility, with notable contributions to understanding how life events (e.g., divorce, care needs) influence migration patterns. Her work integrates quantitative methods, often using large datasets like the Netherlands Kinship Panel Study (NKPS).
Recent studies analyze Twitter data's reflection of European family ties divides, labor market outcomes linked to migration motives, and the impact of family proximity on socioeconomic outcomes. She has been recognized with an Honorary Doctorate from Umea University (2019) and membership in the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (2017).
Mulder supervises PhD students and actively participates in academic activities, including keynote presentations on demography, housing policy, and family sociology. Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to sustainable cities and communities (#11) and reduced inequalities (#10).
