Claire Whyte is an Advanced Research Fellow at the Institute of Medical Sciences, University of Aberdeen, affiliated with the School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition. She obtained her PhD in Medical Sciences from the University of Aberdeen in 2009 and holds the AFHEA postgraduate qualification.
- Current Affiliation: Advanced Research Fellow, Institute of Medical Sciences, University of Aberdeen
- Academic Rank: Research Fellow
- Education: PhD in Medical Sciences (2009)
- Professional Memberships: British Society for Haemostasis and Thrombosis Committee, International Society for Fibrinolysis and Proteolysis (Council Member 2027), International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (Membership Committee)
Her research focuses on cellular regulation of fibrinolysis, particularly platelet-mediated mechanisms in thromboinflammatory conditions. Current projects include investigating fibrinolytic dysregulation in cancer-associated thrombosis (Friends of Anchor Fellowship), breast cancer thrombosis (Principal Investigator), and endothelial fibrinolytic regulation (Daisy Duncan Legacy Fund). She explores interactions between the fibrinolytic system and immune response in diseases like COVID-19, DVT, and stroke.
Recent publications reveal trends in fibrinolytic pathway modulation across multiple pathologies. Key subfields include platelet biology, clot stability, thromboinflammatory mechanisms, and novel antithrombotic strategies. Her work spans basic science (factor XIII-A function) to clinical applications (VITT, ARDS, obstetric coagulopathy).
Scientific recognition includes:
- D. Collen Young Investigator Award (runner up, 2023)
- D. Collen Young Investigator Award (runner up, 2018)
Active funding includes:
- Friends of Anchor Transition to Independence Fellowship (PI)
- Daisy Duncan Legacy Fund (Co-I)
- Medical Research Scotland (Co-I)
