She previously held leadership roles including Head of Teaching Excellence at Northumbria (2019-20), Deputy Head of the School of Government and International Affairs at Durham University (2017-19), and Acting Dean for Equality and Diversity (2016-17). She holds a PhD in Politics from the University of Edinburgh (2002), along with advanced degrees in International Politics, Research Methods, and Law from the same institution.
Her work interrogates how states construct nationhood through museums, migration policies, and historical narratives. Recent studies examine maritime heritage, structural racism in French institutions, and decolonizing national narratives. She has authored influential books such as Nationalism in the Twenty-First Century (2011) and Soldered States: Nation-Building in Germany and Vietnam (2010).
Her 36 publications span peer-reviewed articles and edited volumes, addressing topics like diaspora citizenship, European integration, and museum curation practices. Her current research applies a maritime lens to transcend traditional nation-state frameworks, integrating climate crisis responses and postcolonial critiques. She advises on university education strategies and curriculum development at both Northumbria and Durham.
Labs/Teams: Claire leads Northumbria’s Critical Nationalism Research Group and collaborates with international heritage institutions on decolonization projects. She is actively supervising PhD candidates exploring transnational identities and maritime heritage preservation.
