Claire McGuinness is an Assistant Professor at the School of Information and Communication Studies (ICS), University College Dublin (UCD), where she also serves as the undergraduate programme coordinator and deputy MLIS director. Her academic career has been centered at UCD, progressing from post-doctoral researcher to her current faculty role since 2006. She holds a BA from Dublin City University, an MLIS, and a PhD from UCD, with her doctoral work focusing on academic-library collaborations in embedded information literacy instruction.

Her research explores the educational role of libraries, particularly in the areas of information, digital, and media literacy, reflective practice, professional identity, and the teaching role of librarians. She has led and co-led several research projects funded by Research Ireland, the National Forum for Teaching and Learning, and UCD, including studies on public librarians’ experiences with LGBTQ+ materials and student use of generative AI.
Her recent publications show a strong focus on digital learning, pedagogy, and professional development in LIS. Themes across her work include blended learning, e-tutorials, student engagement, and the integration of digital research skills into undergraduate curricula. She emphasizes collaborative and reflective approaches in both teaching and research.

Claire McGuinness teaches across the MLIS, BSc Social Sciences, and BA programs at UCD. She has coordinated key modules such as Capstone Project, Info Professional as Teacher, and Digital Judgement. She is deeply involved in curriculum development and has led initiatives like the Research Accelerator for the Social Sciences. She advises students and contributes to the academic community through peer review, professional associations (including the Library Association of Ireland), and committee work such as the Media Literacy Ireland Working Group.
She is the author of three influential books: Becoming Confident Teachers (2011), Digital Detectives (2016), and The Academic Teaching Librarian's Handbook (2021), which reflect her commitment to empowering librarians as educators.
