Claire Hooks serves as Associate Professor in Midwifery and Women's Health at Anglia Ruskin University's Faculty of Health, Medicine and Social Care within the School of Midwifery and Community Health. With over 20 years of clinical midwifery experience, she specializes in women's health, health inequalities, substance misuse, pharmacology, medical law/ethics, and interprofessional education. Her research directly addresses critical gaps in maternal healthcare through community-engaged scholarship.
Her educational background includes:
- BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science (Pharmacology), King's College London (1997)
- BSc (Hons) Midwifery, Anglia Ruskin University (2001)
- LLM Medical Law and Practice, Anglia Ruskin University (2007)
- PgCert Higher Education, Anglia Ruskin University (2011)
- EdD (Educational Doctorate) (2017)
Research focuses on substance misuse in pregnancy, socio-economic impacts on maternal/infant outcomes, and stigma reduction through education. Her work bridges physiological birth processes, end-of-life neonatal decisions, and e-learning pedagogy, emphasizing health equity for vulnerable populations including military spouses and drug-using pregnant women. Doctoral research pioneered educational interventions to combat provider bias.
Recent publications demonstrate consistent thematic focus on midwifery practice innovations, health inequalities, and vulnerable populations. Her work employs mixed-methods approaches to examine contraceptive provision, homebirth facilitation, and advanced practitioner roles, revealing systemic barriers in maternal healthcare while proposing evidence-based solutions for equitable service delivery.
Hooks actively supervises doctoral/master's research across public health, education, and midwifery domains while securing significant external funding:
- Office for Veteran Affairs projects on female veterans' healthcare (2022-2024)
- ESNEFT-funded Equality/Diversity in Maternity Services initiative (2022-2025)
- Health Education England studies on contraceptive advice and Advanced Clinical Practitioners (2018-2020)
Collaborating with NHS Trusts, local government, and charities like Open Road drug/alcohol service, her research integrates community perspectives through projects with Essex Probation Service and military health stakeholders.
