معرفی
Cicero Torres Silva is a Professor of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging at Yale School of Medicine and serves as Section Chief for Pediatric Radiology. He is also an Attending Pediatric Radiologist at Yale New Haven Hospital, where he delivers clinical care to pediatric patients across New Haven County and beyond. His academic and clinical work is deeply integrated with translational research in pediatric imaging.
- Professor, Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging, Yale School of Medicine
- Section Chief, Pediatric Radiology
- Attending Physician, Yale New Haven Hospital
Dr. Silva earned his MD from the State University of Londrina, Brazil, completed residency at Santa Marcelina Hospital in São Paulo, and undertook two two-year fellowships in Pediatric Radiology at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne and the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. He also served as a consultant at King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh before joining Yale in 2008.
His research is centered on advancing pediatric imaging techniques, particularly ultrasound, MRI, and CT. He has pioneered the use of ultrasound in early diagnosis of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and midgut volvulus, demonstrating its superiority over traditional radiographs in certain contexts. His work on sedation-free MRI using mock scanner coaching has transformed pediatric imaging protocols. Additionally, his studies on CT evaluation of pulmonary nodules in pediatric oncology patients have contributed to improved detection algorithms. His recent publications span multi-institutional studies on ultrasound diagnostics, AI integration in skeletal age assessment, and clinical trials on thromboprophylaxis in critically ill children.
Dr. Silva’s publications reflect a strong trend toward improving diagnostic accuracy, reducing patient risk (e.g., through lower radiation or sedation avoidance), and leveraging technology such as AI and computer-aided detection. His work bridges clinical radiology with innovation in imaging science, particularly in neonatal and pediatric emergency care.
His scientific awards include three Walter E. Berdon Awards for best papers in Pediatric Radiology (2007, 2008, 2009) and a Special Award for Recognition in Teaching from the Yale Radiology graduating class of 2012.
- Walter E. Berdon Award (2007) – Best clinical research paper
- Walter E. Berdon Award (2008) – Best basic research paper
- Walter E. Berdon Award (2009) – Best basic research paper
- Yale Radiology Teaching Excellence Award (2012)
Dr. Silva is actively involved in mentoring and education, regularly training residents and fellows in pediatric radiology. He has served on committees for the American College of Radiology, American Board of Radiology, and the World Federation of Pediatric Imaging. He has been a sub-investigator in the CRETE clinical trial on enoxaparin prophylaxis. His leadership extends to global health, where he has led outreach efforts for teleradiology consults to low-resource countries through the World Federation of Pediatric Imaging, helping bridge diagnostic gaps for underserved pediatric populations.
He is a member of several professional organizations, including the Society for Pediatric Radiology, American College of Radiology, and American Board of Radiology. His research is supported by collaborative networks at Yale and beyond, involving experts in biostatistics, critical care, and biomedical engineering.
