Chunyu Dong is a Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), affiliated with both the Department of Geography and the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability. His research focuses on ecohydrology and snow hydrology, particularly examining climate change impacts on water cycles and terrestrial ecosystems at multiple scales. Dong employs innovative methodologies including remote sensing, hydrological modeling, and time-lapse photography to analyze snow processes and vegetation responses to drought.
- Ph.D. in Hydrology and Climatology (Heidelberg University, 2016)
- Developed cloud-free MODIS snow data algorithms
- Contributed to time-lapse snow monitoring techniques
His current work involves interdisciplinary collaboration with Professors Glen MacDonald, Gregory Okin, and Thomas Gillespie on drought impacts in southern California. Projects include analyzing vegetation sensitivity to drought, wildfire-vegetation-climate interactions, and energy infrastructure resilience. Despite lacking formal faculty rank, his research bridges environmental science, climatology, and geographic information systems.
