Chung-chieh Shan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Indiana University. He has held roles including Assistant Professor at Indiana University (2013–2019), Visiting Assistant Professor at Cornell University (2011), and Researcher at the University of Tsukuba (2012). His research focuses on programming languages, probabilistic programming, and formal semantics, with contributions to modular programming and computational linguistics.
Education: PhD in Computer Science from Harvard University (2005), BA in Mathematics from Harvard (1999). His dissertation explored linguistic side effects, bridging computational effects and natural language phenomena.
Research Interests: Shan develops probabilistic programming languages to modularize stochastic models and inference algorithms. His work spans formal semantics, logic, and computational linguistics, emphasizing the interplay between programming language constructs and linguistic meaning. Recent projects include symbolic disintegration for probabilistic programs and DSL design for efficient code generation.
