Chuanyi Lyu

Chuanyi Lyu is a historian specializing in ancient Chinese astronomy and an Associate Professor at the Hubei Academy of Social Science. Since 2021, he has served as Director of the Center of Ancient Astronomy. His research focuses on Chinese astrology, historical calendars, and analysis of excavated documents.

At the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (MPIWG), he is investigating how Fenye (astrological field allocation) became institutionalized in Chinese local gazetteers. Key projects include the national-level 'New Research on the Chu Calendar in Unearthed Documents' and collaborative work with MPIWG's Local Gazetteers Working Group (Department III).

His work bridges historical analysis with digital humanities approaches, examining trans-regional knowledge systems through astral sciences. Research areas intersect with material culture, political history, and text culture in late imperial China.
