Christy Andrade

Christy Andrade serves as an Assistant Professor in the Biology Department at Gonzaga University, actively participating in the HHMI Science Education Alliance-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science (SEA-PHAGES) program since at least 2016.

Her research and teaching focus on microbial genomics and phage biology through undergraduate laboratory instruction. She employs hands-on approaches to bacteriophage discovery using hosts like Microbacterium foliorum, Gordonia rubripertincta, and Mycobacterium smegmatis, engaging students in genomic analysis and evolutionary studies within the SEA-PHAGES framework.

Dr. Andrade has instructed over 150 students across 9 sections of BIOL 105L from Fall 2016 through Spring 2025, with class sizes ranging from 13-21 primarily freshman students. Each 3-hour weekly laboratory session emphasizes phage isolation and characterization techniques within the national SEA-PHAGES curriculum.

She remains an active member of the SEA-PHAGES community, with upcoming participation anticipated in the 2025 Phage Genomics Workshop (December 12-16, 2025) and 2026 SEA Symposium (April 24-26, 2026).
