Christos Panagiotopoulos is a Professor in the Department of Social Sciences at the University of Nicosia's School of Humanities and Social Sciences. He holds a PhD in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Practice and Research from The University of Manchester (2002). His work focuses on child/adolescent mental health, interdisciplinary social work practices, and welfare systems, with a regional emphasis on Cyprus. He serves on the editorial boards of the European Journal of Social Work and the Czech and Slovak Journal of Social Work, and leads the European Association of Schools of Social Work’s executive committee since 2017.
Key areas of expertise include social work education reform, migrant healthcare access, Roma community inclusion, and policy analysis. His research spans over two decades, with notable contributions to child welfare systems, mental health service evaluation, and cross-cultural studies on self-injurious behaviors among social work students. Panagiotopoulos advocates for culturally responsive social work practices and has co-edited seminal books like School and Social Work: Applied Interdisciplinary Practices and Financial Crisis and Social Work: Mediterranean Vignettes.
His recent work emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration to address child welfare challenges, stakeholder engagement in policy-making, and the role of education in shaping professional competencies. He remains an influential voice in redefining social work education to reflect local contexts while addressing global challenges.
