Christos Lynteris is Professor of Medical Anthropology and Director of Research at the University of St Andrews' School of Philosophical, Anthropological and Film Studies. He holds the first chair in medical anthropology in the UK, specializing in zoonotic diseases, epidemiological epistemology, and colonial medicine with regional expertise in China and Inner Asia. His work bridges historical and anthropological methods, examining how diseases like plague, SARS, and COVID-19 shape and are shaped by social and multispecies dynamics.
Key projects include the ERC-funded Visual Representations of the Third Plague Pandemic (2013–2018) analyzing epidemic photography's role in shaping pandemic concepts, and the Wellcome Trust–funded Global War Against the Rat (2019–2025), exploring rodent control's epistemic impact on zoonosis understanding.
He has authored/co-edited books such as Visual Plague (MIT Press, 2022) and Ethnographic Plague (Palgrave Macmillan, 2016). Awards include the 2011 University of St Andrews Teaching Award.
Current roles include Museums and Ethnographic Collections Officer and supervisor of PhD students in medical anthropology, historical anthropology, and China/Inner Asia studies. Active in global health initiatives, he co-led the UKRI/MRC project on rodent-borne disease control in Madagascar and Tanzania (2021–2024).
