Dr Christopher Vaughan is a Reader in African History at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), where he also serves as Co-Associate Dean for Research and Knowledge Exchange in the Faculty of Arts, Professional and Social Studies. He is Co-Director of the LJMU Centre for Modern and Contemporary History and has previously held academic positions at Durham University.
His research focuses on twentieth-century African history, particularly colonial and post-colonial political dynamics in East Africa and Sudan. Key areas include regionalism, borderland governance, colonial violence, and African chieftaincy. He led an AHRC-funded project on East African regionalism and has published extensively on Darfur and South Sudan.
His recent publications show a strong trend in historical analysis of regional integration, media regulation in Zambia, and colonial governance in border regions. Themes of authority, identity, resistance, and institutional development recur across his scholarly output.

Christopher Vaughan has supervised research students on topics including British cultural diplomacy in South Africa, the transatlantic dimensions of the Congo Reform Association, and political journalism in Zambia. His research has been supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), and he collaborates internationally with scholars from UCLA and Utrecht University. He is currently working on a monograph on East African regionalism and producing academic and policy-oriented outputs.
He is affiliated with the LJMU Centre for Modern and Contemporary History and contributes to research aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
