Christopher Lean is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Philosophy at Macquarie University, affiliated with the School of Humanities Ethics and Agency Research Centre and the ARC Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology under Prof. Wendy Rogers. His research focuses on the philosophy of life sciences (biology, ecology, medicine) and ethics (bioethics, environment, technology), particularly exploring the role of biotechnology in conservation science and invasive species management.
Lean holds a PhD from the Australian National University (2019) in Ecological Kinds and the Units of Conservation. His work bridges philosophy and applied science, addressing ethical dilemmas in biotechnology applications, conservation strategies, and synthetic biology governance.
Key research interests include explicit value trade-offs in conservation, the ethics of synthetic biology, and the implications of de-extinction. He has contributed to high-impact journals like Trends in Ecology & Evolution and Cambridge Prisms, focusing on topics such as invasive species ethics, moral hazard in biotechnology, and biodiversity preservation.
Lean received the Australian Association of Philosophy Media Prize (2024) and leads the Native Yeast Biobank: A Resource for Synbio Research project (2022–present). His media engagements include expert commentary on The New York Times and ABC's The Philosophers Zone.
His academic contributions span interdisciplinary collaborations, emphasizing the intersection of philosophical inquiry and scientific practice in addressing global environmental challenges.
