Christopher James Barnes

Christopher James Barnes is an Associate Professor at the Section for Hologenomics within the Globe Institute at the University of Copenhagen. He serves as the group leader of The Plant Hologenomics Group, focusing on plant-microbe interactions and sustainable agricultural practices. He also holds an external position as a Tenure-track assistant professor at Aarhus University starting November 1, 2022.

His primary research focuses on the co-evolution of plants and their microbes, particularly how crop domestication has led to 'lazy' crop microbiomes due to fertilizer and water application. His work aims to develop strategies for cultivating better microbiomes in crops to reduce agricultural inputs. His research spans plant hologenomics, microbiome analysis, sustainable agriculture, and metagenomics, with particular attention to wild crop relatives and their potential for improving modern crop microbiomes.
