Dr. Christopher James Backhouse is a Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering and a member of the Waterloo Institute of Nanotechnology at the University of Waterloo. He holds P.Eng. certification and has held academic roles at the University of Alberta (1999-2011) and the University of Waterloo since 2011. His research focuses on quantum devices, biomedical engineering, lab-on-chip technologies, and nanobiotechnology, with applications in medical diagnostics and CMOS integration. He leads the Applied Miniaturisation Laboratory (AML), emphasizing miniaturization and integration of technologies.
Education: BSc in Physics (University of Alberta, 1985), MSc in Radio Astronomy (University of British Columbia, 1987), PhD in Electrical Engineering (University of British Columbia, 1992). Professional roles include Director of the Nanotechnology Engineering Program (2012-2014) and Adjunct Professorships at the University of Alberta.
Research interests span lab-on-chip devices, quantum effects in biology, microfluidics, and remote sensing. Recent work includes developing low-cost diagnostic systems and exploring quantum nanobiotechnology. Awards include the Summit Award (2008) and National Engineering Project Award (2009).
Teaching includes courses on nanoelectronics, nanobiotechnology, and capstone design projects. His lab collaborates with industry to advance technologies like handheld medical diagnostics and integrated CMOS systems.
