Christopher Laurence Gibson is an Associate Professor at Simon Fraser University’s School for International Studies, specializing in development, inequality, and political sociology. He holds a Ph.D. from Brown University, an M.P.P. from Harvard University’s Kennedy School, and a B.A. from Colorado College. His research focuses on civil society’s role in shaping development outcomes in Brazil, India, and Indonesia through mixed-methods approaches.

His work examines how social movements influence health policy in Brazil, the impact of direct democracy on resource distribution in India, and marginalized groups’ engagement in development projects in Indonesia. Notable publications include Movement-Driven Development: The Politics of Health and Democracy in Brazil (Stanford UP, 2019), which analyzes how grassroots activism reduced child mortality. Current research, supported by SSHRC, explores urban development and inequality in Brazil.
